With the current popularity of martial arts in the United States, dojos and dochangs can be found in nearly every neighborhood.  Unfortunately this leads to unqualified instructors hanging out shingles all touting to be the best, but too often these individuals can only provide substandard training.  The Universal Tae Kwon Do Organization (UTO) seeks to ensure students receive only the best education from the instructors it endorses and encourages instructors to remain on the cutting edge with the latest advances in information, technology and teaching techniques.

Instructor Certification Program

The Universal Tae Kwon Do Organization has created a system of requirements for Black Belt students desiring to become instructors.  These requirements ensure exceptional knowledge of the principles of Tae Kwon Do, demand excellent physical performance of the skills and require the ability to teach these to others.

Instructor Certification requires the following:

  • Must be twenty-one years of age or older.

  • Must be 3rd Dan Black Belt or higher.

  • The successful completion of the Team Leader/Assistant Instructor Certification Course.

  • Minimum two years teaching experience as a Team Leader/Assistant Instructor.

  • Must have obtained certifications in the following:

    • Board Breaking Instructor Certification

    • Self-Defense Instructor Certification

    • International Judge and Referee Certification

  • Possess knowledge of business affairs related to operating a DoChang.

  • Complete a physical assessment of instruction ability conducted by a Master Instructor of Tae Kwon Do.

  • A recommendation from a Master Instructor attesting to impeccable integrity, character and maturity.

Certification is valid for one (1) year and requires recertification.  The purpose of the recertification program is to ensure that qualified professionals maintain entry level guidelines by participating in continuing education programs.  Continuing education programs are intended to promote continued competence, development of knowledge and skills, and enhancement of professional skills and judgment beyond the levels required for entry-level practice.  Continuing education activities must focus on increasing knowledge, skills and abilities.

In order to maintain certification, the following are required:

  • Minimum of ten (10) Continuing Education (CE) credits per year.
  • Minimum of ten (10) points obtained by participation in UTO-sanctioned tournaments, demonstrations, workshops and seminars per year.
  • Recertification exam assessing physical skills, knowledge of Tae Kwon Do principles, and teaching ability conducted by a Master instructor.
  • A recommendation from a Master Instructor for continued certification.

Failure to meet recertification requirements will result in the revocation of the Instructor Certificate.  Notice will be sent in writing explaining the reason for revocation and what steps are necessary to achieve re-instatement.

Team Leader/Assistant Instructor Certification Program

The Universal Tae Kwon Do Organization (UTO) has created a system of requirements for Black Belt students desiring to become team leaders/assistant instructors.  These requirements ensure the foundation necessary to becoming an Instructor of Tae Kwon Do.

Assistant Instructor Certification requires the following:

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be a 1st Dan Black Belt or higher.
  • The successful completion of the Team Leader/Assistant Instructor Certification Course.
  • A recommendation from a Master Instructor attesting to impeccable integrity, character and maturity.

Certification is valid for one (1) year and requires recertification.  The purpose of the recertification program is to ensure physical competence and develop professional competence.

In order to maintain certification, the following are required:

  • Minimum of ten (10) points obtained by participation in UTO-sanctioned tournaments, demonstrations, workshops and seminars per year.
  • Minimum of five (5) Continuing Education (CE) credits per year.
  • A recommendation from a Master Instructor for continued certification.

Failure to meet recertification requirements will result in the revocation of the Instructor Certificate.  Notice will be sent in writing explaining the reason for revocation and what steps are necessary to achieve re-instatement.

Any student wishing to confirm the status of any UTO-endorsed instructor or team leader/assistant instructor can contact the Universal Tae Kwon Do Organization in writing and make such inquiry.
